After a 3 minute video of 11-year-old Nada Al-Ahdal surfaced on Youtube last Sunday, the world watched in shock as the girl recounted the story of her forced marriage.
“It’s true that I ran away from my family. I can’t live with them anymore,” she said in the video. “Enough. I want to go live with my uncle. What about the innocence of childhood? What have the children done wrong? Why do you marry them off like that?”
“I have managed to solve my problem, but some innocent children can’t solve theirs, and they might die, commit suicide, or do whatever comes to mind,” she also added.
In Yemen, there are no laws that protect under-aged girls from being forced into arranged marriages, causing 52% of girls to be married before the age of 18.
The story is reminiscent of the 15-year-old girl from Saudi Arabia who was forced to marry a 70-year-old man.
