2-year-old cancer patient Hazel Hammersley wanted nothing more than a slice of pizza.Instead, she received a pizza party that she would never forget.
A few months ago, Hazel was diagnosed with stage 3 neuroblastoma cancer. On the Fourth of July, she was admitted to the Children’s Hospital with a persistent fever. To help her pass the time and satisfy her craving for pizza, the family created a sign on her hospital room window, “Send Pizza Rm 4112.”
The window sign caught the attention of a passing driver who took a photo and posted it up on Reddit.”Photo taken outside Children’s Hospital in Los Angeles,” he wrote. “Smart kid.”
One Reddit user quickly responded, “No need to fear! Pizza Delivery will soon be here!” After that, the response was so overwhelming that 30 pies were delivered to the hospital.
Hazel shared the pizzas with other kids, families, and doctors on her floor. In fact, so much more pizza came that the CHLA had to send out a notice, “Pizza No Longer Needed.”
Hazel’s mom, Lauren Hammersley sent in a shoutout to the Reddit community, writing, “… A HUGE thank you from all of us! We are so surprised by the outpouring of support and are so grateful! Thanks for all the pizza!”
And so far, Hazel is doing much better. “She is going to get through this journey. She is going to be strong and healthy at the end of it,” the mom adds. “We don’t take time for granted. We have four kids, 6 and under. [With little kids who] require attention, you forget to savor the little things. We’ve learned to take every moment and savor it and not wait to say things.”
