10-year-old Hannah Wise is suing her mother’s ex boyfriend to get her dog back.
After Hannah and her mom moved out of Mitchell Rechter’s home last spring, he agreed to take care of the dog until the pair settled into a new place. Now, Rechter is refusing to return the girl’s pet poodle.
“He was a part of me,” Hannah said of her dog Mystery. “He would come in my bed and snuggle up to me.”
“He knew that I cared about that dog so much,” she accused Rechter. “It was really heartbreaking for me.”
On the flipside, Rechter’s lawyer, Jonathan Jones explained that the story is not as straightforward.
“The plaintiff abandoned the dog, gave it to the defendant to take care of, knowing he wanted to care for the dog, and took another dog with her when she left,” Jones summarized. “Now, [Rechter] is attached to the dog and wants to keep it.”
Hannah’s mom, Adrienne Lenhoff countered that Rechter has not only taken over a thousand dollars worth of her possessions, but has also affected Hannah’s emotional state. “This has made her not trust adults,” Lenhoff said. “A big part of her innocence has been taken from her because of this. These are lessons that no child 10 years old should have to be learning.”
The trial for Mystery is set for July 2014.
