After his baby daughter passed away, Nathen Steffel wanted a portrait of her that he could keep forever.
Unfortunately, since Sophia was sick the entire time, he couldn’t find a photo of her that wasn’t blocked by tubes and machines. And so the dad posted a plea on Reddit.
“My daughter recently passed away after a long battle in the children’s hospital,” he wrote. “Since she was in the hospital her whole life, we never were able to get a photo without all her tubes. Can someone remove the tubes from this photo?”
The outpouring of response was overwhelming with people submitting beautifully retouched and drawn photos.
“I was overwhelmed with the response I got,” Steffel tells TODAY. “My wife and I were so grateful so many people took the time out of their own lives to either send a nice message of sympathy or an awesome drawing. They couldn’t have made this father any happier.”
Sophia was born on May 30 and was diagnosed with hepatic hemangioma. She spent most of her days in hospitals, and was on the waiting list for a liver until she unfortunately passed away 6 weeks later.
“I didn’t really want all the publicity, I just wanted a picture,” Steffel also added. “What I received was a whole lot of love and support from complete strangers.”
