4-year-old Anthony Smith was hearing-impaired, but the little boy refused to wear his ‘blue ear’ hearing aid. Why was he adamant? He was certain superheroes don’t wear hearing aids.
Unsure of how to appease her son, Christina D’Allesandro emailed Marvel Comics for help.
Marvel Editors first sent over a 1984 comic book with Hawkeye, a superhero who had to wear a small listening device after his hearing was temporarily disrupted. “We wanted to give him a concrete example,” explained editor Bill Rosemann.
On top of that, production artists at Marvel decide to take it a step further and create a custom superhero. “Why not have the superhero be a young kid himself?” artist Manny Mederos recalled.
And thus, “Blue Ear”, an Anthony Smith modeled superhero was born.
“With great power, comes great responsibility,” Rosemann said of doing something extra special for their fans.
Also, since receiving his own custom superhero, Anthony now has no problem wearing his own ‘blue ear’.
