At the heat of the gun debate and the ubiquitous nature of social media, a basketball dad made a huge error of judgment after posting a Facebook message post-game that hoped for someone to “shoot up the [opponent] school real soon!”
Jeff Berni, the dad of one of the basketball players for Vancouver Skyview High was involved in a dispute with one of the rival fans post-game. In the heat of the moment, he decided to air his frustration on Facebook, writing, “Camas fans!!!!! Worst in the league!!!!! I hope someone shoots up their school real soon!!!!!!!!”
“He flipped kids off. He had some negative reaction [about the game],” Camas Athletic Director Josh Gibson recalled. “Exactly what is said, we don’t know.”
In the aftermath of the recent Newtown shooting, Camas police took the threat seriously and quickly launched an investigation.
“I think when you look at the things that have been going on recently with shootings, I think that it’s just unfortunate that a comment like that is thrown out,” Gibson added. “There’s an emotional response to it.”
No formal charges have been filed, although Berni is now banned from Camas school property.
