A sixth-grader from Pennsylvania is in a medically induced coma after getting into a fight with boys who were allegedly bullying him.
11-year-old Bailey O’Neil got into a schoolyard fight with boys at the Darby Township School. During the scuffle, he was hit multiple times in his face with a severe blow that fractured his nose.
The boy’s parents rushed Bailey to the hospital for treatment for his injuries, including a concussion. He was later cleared and released from the hospital, although his dad noticed something was a bit off.
“He was sleeping,” his dad Rob O’Neil recalled. “He was moody. He wasn’t himself. He was angry a little bit. He wasn’t really eating.”
A few days after the attack, Bailey suddenly suffered from violent seizures which forced doctors to put him in a medically induced coma.
“Every day I’m trying to stay strong for him,” his dad told ABC. “When you get into that hospital room and you’re looking at him, I would trade places in a heartbeat. It’s my buddy, you know.”
School and police official are now investigating the incident.
“We take bullying seriously,” Southeast Delco School District Superintendent Stephen Butz said in a statement. “We are very concerned about the medical condition of the student and our thoughts and prayers are with the family and students.”
The boy who delivered the staggering blow to Bailey was suspended for 2 days, although no criminal charges have been filed. Bailey has been in a coma for over 2 weeks now.
