8-Year-Old Resembles Newborn Due to Rare Condition
Suffering a rare genetic condition that defies aging, Gabby Williams may technically be 8 years old, but she has the physical appearance of a newborn.
“In some people, something happens to them and the development process is slowed,” medical researcher Richard Walker explained. “The rate of change in the body slows and is negligible.”
This condition is so rare that only a handful of people suffer from it, although there is currently no medical explanation for it.
“Gabrielle hasn’t changed since pretty much forever,” her mom Mary Margret Williams explained in the TLC documentary ‘My 40 Year Old Child’. “She has gotten a little longer and we have jumped into putting her in size 3-6 month clothes instead of 0-3 months for the footies.”
“Last time we weighed her she was up a pound to 11 pounds and she’s gotten a few more haircuts,” she also added, specifying the only changes that Gabby has experienced since being born.
And while she physically remains stagnant, she also requires the same round-the-clock care as a newborn.
“She still has the same bottle feeds every three hours,” Mary said. “Even though she can’t talk, we know she recognises all her family because she responds to people holding her. She used to cry a lot before she was one because she got a lot of infections and was in a lot of pain. But we’ve learned to manage them now so she’s much more content.”
So what’s the possible cause for this condition? Walker refers to decreased “developmental inertia” as the root of the genetic condition. Beyond that, it remains a medical mystery.
