Activists are outraged after a 70-year-old man allegedly married a 15-year-old girl in Saudi Arabia.
The marriage became public information after the man complained to officials that his child bride was taken back by her parents. This comes after the man reportedly bought the girl from her parents for $20,000.
Human rights activists have now volunteered their help to the child who they believe escaped from the man after an episode of domestic violence.
“When you consider the very large difference in age, it looks more like this was not a marriage, but like the girl was sold,”
explained Dr. Suhaila Zein al-Abedin of the Saudi National Association for Human Rights. “The girl’s parents need to be held responsible for this.”
Other activists have gone to social media to voice their concerns.
Yemeni activist NoonArabia tweeted, “#ChildMarriage is a violation of human rights http://www.humanrightsdefence.org/child-marriage-as-an-human-rights-issue.html … #RunAwayBride #PTs.”
Egyptian activist Mona Eltahawy tweeted, “It’s only when there’s enough public outrage that we can fight #childmarriage. We are not angry enough to help that 15 y/o & others like her.”
Child marriage continues to be an issue in different parts of the world, where children as young as 5 are subject to arranged marriages.
