A 12-year-old girl was threatened with expulsion unless she changed her natural hair.
Honor student Vanessa VanDyke has attended Faith Christian Academy since she was in third grade. Because she wore her hair naturally, she was constantly teased by her peers at school. Unfortunately, when she brought up the issue to school officials, she was told to change her natural hair, or face expulsion.
“It says that I’m unique,” Vanessa explains her natural hair to WKMG. “First of all, it’s puffy and I like it that way. I know people will tease me about it because it’s not straight. I don’t fit in.”
“I’m going to fight for my daughter,” Vanessa’s mom Kent also added. “If she wants her hair like that, she will keep her hair like that. There are people out there who may think that natural hair is not appropriate. She is beautiful the way she is.”
UPDATE: After news of Vanessa’s dilemma became public, she received an outpouring of support which luckily, helped reverse the school’s decision.
“We hope that the student and that we would put this behind them and continue to excel in the Christian education,” said school board member Carl Jackson. “We love Vanessa. We want her back and we are not asking for any alterations and we want her back.”
