10-year-old Michael Feeney lost his battle against cancer, and received a hero’s farewell.
Michael was named honorary police chief for his town in Ridgewood, New Jersey. Unfortunately, a week later, he passed away following a four year battle with Ewing’s sarcoma.
During his funeral, he received full police honors, complete with bagpipes and officers in full blue uniforms.
“Michael brought out the best in everybody,” Police Chief John Ward said. “I can’t believe the response from the departments. I’ve gotten calls from all over the country, apologizing for not being able to make it. I guess I want to thank the Feeney family for sharing Michael with us. He’s touched everybody in this community.”
“He showed people what it is to care about something without any personal motivation for yourself. He showed courage; he wanted to make a difference,” Ward also added.
In honor of Michael, the police youth academy would be named the “Chief Michael Feeney Junior Police Academy.”
